Grosse Pointe Woods Emergency Dentist

Some things just can't wait—if you have a dental emergency, contact Dr. Hadgis' office and he will see you the same day if at all possible. Use the information below to determine if you have a serious emergency that must be addressed right away, or if you have a minor emergency.

Minor Dental Emergencies

  • Object Wedged Between Teeth—NEVER try to remove a foreign object with anything sharp. Use only dental floss. If you can not dislodge the object yourself, make an appointment.

  • Chipped Tooth—This is the most common dental emergency. If the chip has exposed dentin, heat or cold may be uncomfortable. Make an appointment as soon as possible, and take an over-the-counter pain reliever as necessary.

  • Cracked or Lost Filling—Apply oil of cloves to a small piece of cotton, squeeze out the excess and place the cotton in the cavity. The cavity can also be covered with paraffin. Make sure you brush and floss thoroughly to keep infection at bay, use OTC pain medication if necessary, and make an appointment as soon as possible to have the filling repaired or replaced.

  • Toothache—This could be an infection, injury or abscess, and if your pain is severe you should be seen the same day. Rinse your mouth well with warm water and use floss to try and gently remove any trapped debris. Use a cold compress if there is swelling, and a pain reliever as necessary. Never place an aspirin directly on the tooth or gum.

Serious Dental Emergencies

When to go to the emergency room with a dental emergency:

  • If you are bleeding heavily, go immediately to an ER.
  • If you have punctures or lacerations to your mouth, they must be treated in an ER before you visit a dentist.
  • Severe pain—especially if accompanied by a fever—should be addressed in an ER before you see a dentist.

  • Broken Tooth—If your injury exposes the deep pulp tissue of your tooth, see a dentist right away. This tissue decays rapidly, which can lead to serious injury or infection. Rinse with warm water and apply a cold compress, and get to a dentist.

  • Knocked Out Tooth—Whether or not your tooth can be saved depends on how rapidly you can get to a dentist, and how carefully you handle your tooth. For the best results, contact the dental office immediately to get detailed instructions and tell them you are coming in. Rinse the tooth lightly in running water (do not scrub), and if possible, put the tooth back in the socket. If you can't re-insert the tooth, transport it in a container of milk and try to get to dentist within 30 minutes.

  • Bitten Tongue or Lip—Clean the wound thoroughly, then apply pressure and a cold compress to stop bleeding and minimize swelling. If the bleeding will not stop, go to an emergency room or immediate medical care facility.
