Current research has not identified a cure for sleep apnea, but it can be treated. A sleep apnea specialist will determine the type of treatment you will need, based on the severity of your condition. Treatment aims to keep your airway open while you sleep, which will lead to better oxygenation, better sleep, and improved mood and alertness during the daytime hours.
If Dr. Hadgis suspects you have sleep apnea, he will refer you to a specialist for a sleep study to determine the presence and level of severity of your sleep apnea. In moderation to severe cases, the most effective treatment for obstructive sleep apnea is a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure device, or CPAP.
If you have a mild level of sleep apnea, or if you are not able to wear a CPAP, Dr. Hadgis can design a mouthpiece that can help.
Pictured at left is an example of a custom-made oral appliance (Airway Orthotic, or mandibular advancement appliance).
If you have a mild case of sleep apnea, Dr. Hadgis will custom design a device to help make sure your airway remains open as you sleep. Occasionally, he may refer to back to the sleep specialist to verify that the appliance is working properly.
