Grosse Pointe Woods Sleep Apnea

What can a dentist do to help with sleep apnea? Dr. Hadgis' approach to whole body health makes him the ideal professional to help you address this very serious health issue.

What is Sleep Apnea?

Signs and Symptoms of Obstructive Sleep Apnea

  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Depression
  • Non-restorative sleep
  • Learning disabilities and/or decreased memory
  • Automobile accidents
  • Personality changes
  • Erectile dysfunction

Apnea is a Greek word meaning "without breath", and sleep apnea (also referred to as obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA) is quite literally that—moments throughout your sleep cycle when you stop breathing for up to a minute. It is a fairly common disorder, and most people do not even know it is going on until they have described their symptoms to a knowledgeable physician. Sufferers can have as many as thirty apnea events per hour. This understandably often leaves them feeling exhausted when they wake up, as they have been fighting for oxygen for hours.

Health Risks Associated with Sleep Apnea

Left untreated, the health cost of obstructive sleep apnea can be severe:

  • High blood pressure
  • Stroke
  • Irregular heart beat
  • Heart attack
  • Morning headaches and dry mouth
  • Chronic sleepiness
  • Poor job performance and impaired concentration
  • Irritability and family discord
  • Depression and decreased libido
  • Gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD)

For more information about what can be done to treat your sleep apnea, see our page on sleep apnea treatment.

Do you snore?

Forty percent of people who snore have obstructive sleep apnea. See our page on snoring treatment if you struggle with snoring.
